Why an investigation template draws no relations

Three investigation templates for three classes of work. They carry roles and verification tasks, but not a single relation.

The template sets out roles and verification questions but draws no relation: the analyst draws one once a document confirms it.

Three investigation templates arrived in CATK today: an ownership chain, a vessel and its ports, a tender and its contractor. They are ordinary workspace files, they open through the “Import” button, and each carries records and verification tasks.

There is not a single relation in any of them, and that is deliberate: it is the main rule the templates are built on.

What is inside

The records in a template are named by role: “target company”, “registered owner”, “beneficial owner”, “company register extract”. Each role comes with one sentence saying what to put in it. Roles carry no evidence, dates or coordinates: they are empty places, to be filled with whatever the documents actually name.

Verification tasks are phrased as questions. Instead of “check the signatory”, the template says “who signs for the company, and does the register agree?”. A question names what counts as an answer without suggesting what the answer will be. A task has no owner: the analyst assigns one.

Why there are no relations

CATK’s first rule forbids invented figures: a number nobody computed is not shown. That rule is easy to check, because an invented number is visible.

A pre-drawn relation is worse. A template that already shows “owner → controls → company” suggests the conclusion before a single document has been read, and from the first minute the analyst reads the extract looking for confirmation of a ready-made idea.

A suggested shape of the answer is visible neither on the screen nor in the file, and that makes it more dangerous than an invented number.

So a relation appears in an investigation only when a document shows it, and it is drawn by the analyst who read that document.

What comes next

The templates are on the CATK page, in both languages. The note saying that this is a template is written inside each file, because the file stays with the reader after the page changes. Further templates are made by the same three rules: records are named by role, tasks are phrased as questions, and there are no relations.
